The Ramen Diaries, Part 8 – Hakata-Maru Ramen

Ramalert! Hakata-Maru ramen is a new establishment on the top floor level of Paddy’s Markets. They serve super cheap bowls of ramen with super cheap sides. I went for ramen, no sides.

They keep it simple with a tonkotsu base served three ways; red, white or black. The red is chili, black is garlic and white is plain pork broth. I tried the black garlic tonkotsu.

The tonkotsu broth is milky but well-flavoured and the black garlic only adds to the yummy flavour. Extra servings of noodles are available for $1. It’s a good serving size, not huge, but cheaper than other joints in the area. The quality was good, with free pickled ginger, sesame seeds and a chili pickled vegetable substance on offer for adding to the broth by the patron. The egg comes with the serve but is nothing exciting althrough the yolk is nice and runny.

The noodles are a kind I haven’t tried so far, thin and straight. I’m not as much of a fan but they were perfectly cooked and did not become too soft.

I highly recommend Hakata-Maru for a good all round bowl of ramen!
