Victoire, Darling St Rozelle

Check out the lemon tart and the slide of Portugese custard tart I bought from Victoire!

Victoire makes lovely baked goods, a little on the expensive side (considering the size of some – look at that skinny little lemon tart!) but always delicious. Recommended.

St. Louis House of Fine Ice Cream & Dessert

St Louis strawberry fondue

St Louis strawberry fondue

This was a very exciting dessert. We were lucky enough to be seated inside after first sitting outside, when a little table was vacated. Then, when ordering we were told there were no bananas left for the strawberry and banana fondue – so sadly, we had to get only strawberries as well as lolly raspberries. I wasn’t sad at all! Strawberries are clearly the more superior fruit! These strawberries were lovely and tart and complemented the high quality chocolate perfectly.

This hot chocolate was a point of contention. While one person had a perfect hot chocolate, two of us had a distinct taste of cinnamon. It wasn’t pleasant – if I wanted cinnamon I would have bought a spiced hot chocolate! However, was one was perfect I will assume that it the one that is normally served.

St Louis was a great place to indulge in chocolate goodies! Highly recommended (especially when they run out of bananas…)

Little Darling Diner, Balmain

Little Darling Diner tea

Little Darling Diner tea

Spending time with friends is pleasant; chatting over a cup of tea is even better. Little Darling Diner is the best place to do so! Their prices are reasonable, the English Breakfast was lovely.

Little Darling Diner dessert trio

These three desserts are; chocolate mousse/meringue/strawberries, deconstructed orange cheesecake, and crème brûlée. All three were lovely. The lime crème brûlée was creamy and had a lovely crunchy top that cracked perfectly under my spoon. The chocolate mousse was dense and rich, the meringues soft and the strawberries lent an acidity that stopped the dish from being overwhelmingly sweet. The cheesecake was the winner out of all three desserts, with a delicate and dark taste of orange coming through the cheese.

Little Darling Diner is the perfect place to catch up with friends. The decor is French inspired, delicate and opulent. Highly recommended!

Spats Coffee House

Spatz Cafe banana split

Spats Cafe banana split

It’s sad to see a place like this still drearily and uninspiringly serving dull desserts, surrounded by excellent dessert cafes such as By Blackbird and Eggless. Spats is stuck somewhere in the 90’s, assuming it’s ok to serve overpriced, uninspired splits and sundaes. They don’t let anything get in their way, using chocolate syrup by the bottle and colouring cream with food dye to make a visually sickening plate. Spats isn’t getting away with it these days, as it was pretty quiet when we visited. We went there because Eggless had a ridiculously long line. It was a mistake.

I wont bother going back.

Tutti Fruitti, Bilpin

Tutti Fruitti scones and tea

Tutti Fruitti scones and tea

Tutti Fruitti had the most gorgeous garden setting, with tables set up, surrounded by rose bushes and, sadly, flies. I ended up with two in my tea.Luckily there was enough tea left in my pot for another cup! The scones were a little flat, but the house made Tutti Fruitti jam was perfect. If they had proper whipped cream, it would have been even better! Cream in a can is not appropriate for a cream tea.

Steven Ter Horst

They’ve moved to a trendy shopfront down the East End, and they’re serving delicious chocolates, desserts and drinks. Getting a chocolatey dessert and sweet milky drink was too much for me – their iced teas are also recommended. The food is good quality but I’m not sure if I was overly impressed with my drink.

The tart was rich and decadent – the drink was sweet and very liquid. It didn’t have enough honeycomb chunks and I would have liked a thicker consistency.

San Churros, Glebe NSW

Franchises are a hit and miss for me. You know what to expect. You assume the quality will be the same everywhere.

A friend of mine used to manage at KFC. I would complain the chips were always undercooked. He would always defend them and say they’re cooked exactly how they are supposed to be (it’s all a matter of timing!) But for me, the chips were not cooked for long enough and obviously the required time isn’t long enough!

I remember visiting San Churros years ago when it was in Melbourne CBD. Their hot chocolate was thick and the churros were new and exciting.

I visited the Glebe store while at the 2013 Glebe Street Fair. The weather was dismal and hot chocolate seemed like a great idea, especially as it started bucketing down with rain just as we were walking past, without umbrellas!

It wasn’t the same quality I remember, though. The hot chocolate just didn’t seem thick enough. The churros were a little pale. The iced chocolate, though, was spot on. It wasn’t busy and so wasn’t too loud. It was okay.

Princess Coco

Princess Coco

Princess Coco

Princess Coco is lovely. The shabby chic decor, plush purple velvet chairs in cosy booths and fabulous desserts are perfect for a date night or drinks with friends.

I highly recommend both the iced chocolate au lait (milk!) and the iced early grey chocolate (the bergamot ends up making it taste almost orange-chocolate). My dark hot chocolate was probably the most boring/pedestrian drink of all three! Massive food envy time!

Apparently the desserts are really good as well. It gives me an excuse to return, soon.

Movenpick, Manly

Movenpick at Manly – icecream! I love waffle cones and I love trying new icecream joints!

Movenpick maple pecan and chocolate coconut

Movenpick maple pecan and chocolate coconut

Both flavours were super yummy, creamy and moreish. The chunks of pecan in the maple pecan icecream made the icecream more fun, and the coconut chocolate looked fantastic before it started all melting together! Price was on par with most other icecream and gelato I’ve tried in Sydney!

Gelato Messina – Pyrmont

Gelato Messina gets great reviews – as it should! There’s funky flavours with plenty of depth and interesting ingredients.

Gelato Messina Star

Gelato Messina Star

It is nice, and I can’t remember the flavours I had – though they were “special ones”! I think one had peanut butter in it…

Overall, price is reasonable, but I think I didn’t manage to try anything that knocked my socks off. I definitely need to try more of their flavours!

Gelato is slowly taking Sydney by storm. There’s Gelatissimo, which I had years ago and loved. Now there’s Cow & Moon, Gelato Messina, N2 and others… These few seem like the most creative with their flavouring. My current favourite, though, is Darling Gelato as it is down the street from me and even though the flavour combinations aren’t as wacky as the others, and the concept is fairly pedestrian, they do their flavours well. Sometimes that is all you need!
