Gelato Messina – Pyrmont

Gelato Messina gets great reviews – as it should! There’s funky flavours with plenty of depth and interesting ingredients.

It is nice, and I can’t remember the flavours I had – though they were “special ones”! I think one had peanut butter in it…

Overall, price is reasonable, but I think I didn’t manage to try anything that knocked my socks off. I definitely need to try more of their flavours!

Gelato is slowly taking Sydney by storm. There’s Gelatissimo, which I had years ago and loved. Now there’s Cow & Moon, Gelato Messina, N2 and others… These few seem like the most creative with their flavouring. My current favourite, though, is Darling Gelato as it is down the street from me and even though the flavour combinations aren’t as wacky as the others, and the concept is fairly pedestrian, they do their flavours well. Sometimes that is all you need!

Darling Gelato

Darling Gelato is my local. Every other gelato joint gets compared to this place, and usually they’re found wanting! Darling makes true to name flavours, especially their passionfruit and pistachio. I love their cherry flavoured gelatos (of which there are around three!), as well as the strachiatella, which may not be spelled correctly, but is a chocolate chip vanilla.

I’ve started buying the two scoop coppas and sharing them, because I go there so often! Even shared it’s a great serving size. You’re always made to feel welcome, and there’s always a plenty of others sitting around enjoying their gelato.
They recently came started serving waffles and crepes, and I can’t wait to try them!

N2 Extreme Gelato, Haymarket

I went to N2 Extreme Gelato for some extreme gelato – Pandan crème brûlée! At $8 a serve the pricing was a little high but hey – it’s extreme, and exciting!

Apologies for the extremely poor photography! I loved the crunchy topping and the yummy pandan flavour of the gelato.

N2 isn’t just gelato – it’s about the experience. I’d recommend trying it out, especially for some of the more wacky flavours! It’s fun watching them use nitrogen and the blow torch they use for crème brûlée! The gelato itself is smooth and creamy, and it’s a little different from your average gelato as each serve is made individually!
